The New Jersey Nets have posted several impressive performances during their current nine-game winning streak. To extend the run one more game, they'll need to reverse recent history.

The Nets try to match their season-high 10-game winning streak when they host the Memphis Grizzlies.

Memphis has won the last five meetings in the series, holding New Jersey under 100 points each time. The streak includes a 110-63 rout on Dec. 13, 2003, the Nets' second-lowest scoring output in their history.

In this season's earlier meeting, New Jersey shot only 35 percent from the field in an 81-69 defeat on Jan. 13 in Memphis, Tenn.

If the Nets' defense keeps playing the way it has been recently, a high-scoring effort may not be necessary. New Jersey has held seven of nine opponents under 85 points during its winning streak, and has allowed fewer than 20 points in seven of the last 12 quarters.

The Nets' defense has been particularly good of late against the league's elite teams, as they followed a 79-74 victory Sunday over the Detroit Pistons with a 110-72 rout of Phoenix on Monday.

"It was a rare opportunity in this league to take on two elite teams on back-to-back nights, playing teams with two different styles and come away with two wins," New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank said. "For them to display so much energy on two straight nights shows their mental toughness.

"It's definitely a credit to our team. The guys gave a great effort."

The 38-point margin of victory was the largest of the season for the Nets, who held the Suns to a franchise-worst 26.8 field goal percentage. New Jersey also held reigning league MVP Steve Nash scoreless for the first time this season.

Nenad Krstic led the Nets with 21 points and Vince Carter added 20. Carter has scored at least 20 points in 14 straight games.

New Jersey's longest winning streak of the season was 10 games, from Dec. 16-Jan. 8.

Pau Gasol scored a franchise-record 44 points for Memphis on Tuesday against Seattle, but it wasn't enough to win. Ray Allen's basket with 0.3 seconds remaining lifted the SuperSonics to a 98-97 victory, snapping the Grizzlies' seven-game winning streak.

"Great 'D. Better shot," Memphis' Eddie Jones said of Allen's winning basket. "That's the only thing I can say about it. (He) made a heck of a shot. Got to take your hat off to that."

Gasol is averaging 37.7 points and shooting 59.7 percent from the field over his last three games. He has never scored more than 21 points, though, in nine career games against New Jersey.

Memphis trails the fifth-place Los Angeles Clippers by one game in the Western Conference playoff race.
