Montreal (27-22-8) at Florida (23-27-8) 7:00 pm EST
SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) - Cristobal Huet answered the call in his first game filling in for two-time All-Star goaltender Jose Theodore. The Montreal Canadiens hope Huet steps up again when they visit the Florida Hurricanes on Thursday.
A 30-year-old journeyman, Huet will be counted on to carry a heavy load in the absence of Theodore, who will miss six to eight weeks with a fractured right heel.
"For us to make the playoffs, we are going to need solid goaltending," Montreal captain Saku Koivu said. "Theodore's going to be out for a while, which is too bad for us because we really need him."
Huet has been solid as a backup this season, posting a 7-5-3 record and a .925 save percentage in 18 games. Interim coach Bob Gainey hopes the trend continues.
"Our skaters don't always play as well as they should, so our goalie needs to be good," Gainey said. "Huet has really given us strong play for a while now. I'd like to convince our team to take some of the responsibility off the goalie."
Huet made 32 saves and turned aside all all 27 shots he faced in the first two periods of the Canadiens' 5-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday.
Rookie Chris Higgins tallied twice while Koivu and defenseman Sheldon Souray registered three assists each for Montreal, which opened its post-Olympic schedule with a six-game road trip.
The Canadiens look for their fifth win in the last seven games against a Panthers squad fresh off an 8-2 rout over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.
Captain Olli Jokinen, Chris Gratton and Joe Nieuwendyk all had two goals for Florida, which trails Montreal by eight points for eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
