CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Coyotes' knack for playing to the level of their opposition has left coach Wayne Gretzky scratching his head.
The Coyotes look to record just their fourth victory in 13 contests Sunday when they take on the struggling Chicago Blackhawks in the first of two matchups in five days.
During its slump, Phoenix has managed to record dominating victories over Western Conference powers Detroit, Dallas and also Los Angeles, while losing to Chicago and Columbus. The stretch has left the Coyotes nine points off the pace for the final playoff spot.
Playing the fourth contest of a five-game road trip, Phoenix is coming off its fourth defeat in five games, a 2-0 loss to the Nashville Predators. The Coyotes have not won consecutive contests since January 26-28.
Chicago has also lost nine of 12 and is tied with St. Louis for last place in the West, four points in back of Columbus.
Kyle Calder scored his 16th goal in the second period for Chicago, which lost for the fourth time in five games with Friday's 2-1 defeat to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
The Blackhawks have won both previous encounters against the Coyotes this season, including a 3-1 triumph February 7. The teams will meet again Thursday in Phoenix.
