DAYTON, Ohio (Ticker) -- George Mason already has sent one of last season's Final Four teams packing, North Carolina will try to avoid being a second.

Freshman sensation Tyler Hansbrough and the third-seeded Tar Heels seek a second straight trip to the regional semifinals when they face the No. 11 Patriots in the second of the Washington Region on Sunday.

A team rebuilding following last season's loss of its top seven scorers, North Carolina (23-7) took the first step in defending its national championship with a 69-65 victory over No. 14 Murray State on Friday.

Needing a late push to advance, the Tar Heels turned to their heralded freshman class of Hansbrough, Danny Green, Bobby Frasor and Marcus Ginyard. The quartet scored UNC's final 29 points as it avoided a first-round exit for the first time since 1999.

The unanimous choice for ACC Freshman of the Year, Hansbrough scored 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. It was his 14th 20-point game of the season, a school record.

Green had 14 points and Frasor added nine for the Tar Heels, who improved to 2-0 all-time against the Racers.

Behind the perfect 8-of-8 shooting of Folarin Campbell and inside play of Will Thomas, George Mason claimed in first NCAA Tournament victory in four appearances, upsetting a disappointing Michigan State team, 75-65.

Campbell finished with 21 points and Thomas added 18 and 14 rebounds, but it will be the return of senior guard Tony Skinn that will highlight the Patriots' attack.

The team's second-leading scorer, Skinn was suspended for a game after punching a Hofstra player in the groin in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament semifinals.

"He's meant so much to our program," George Mason coach Jim Larranaga said. "He's made some incredibly big shots and he plays such a big part. He will not start on (Sunday). I asked Tony to come in and give us a spark off the bench and with all smiles he said, 'That's what I'll do.'"
