OTTAWA (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators figure to have a good chance of snapping out of their recent funk Monday when they host rookie phenom Sidney Crosby and the reeling Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Senators established themselves as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference but have fallen five points behind the conference-leading Carolina Hurricanes after losing three of their previous four games.

Dominik Hasek made 26 saves Saturday but was beaten by rookie Thomas Vanek's highlight-reel move in the shootout as Ottawa dropped a 2-1 decision to the Buffalo Sabres, who trail the Senators by four points in the Northeast Division.

Bryan Smolinski scored the only goal for the Senators, whose only win in their last four contests has come against the Penguins, who own the worst record in the NHL.

Captain Daniel Alfredsson tallied twice, including one of Ottawa's three shorthanded goals in Thursday's 7-2 victory over Pittsburgh, which was playing without Crosby.

It was the Penguins' fourth straight loss, a streak that was extended to five in Saturday's 5-4 shootout setback to the New York Islanders.

Mark Recchi and Crosby each scored for Pittsburgh, which managed 44 shots - including 12 from defenseman Sergei Gonchar.
