The top seed in the West Coast Conference tournament has already been secured. So has its ninth consecutive regular-season league championship. Now, all that’s left for Gonzaga is perfection.

The 17th-ranked Bulldogs look to finish off their third undefeated conference season since 2003-04 on Saturday afternoon when they visit a San Diego team that prevented them from winning their fifth consecutive WCC tournament title last season.

Gonzaga (22-5) improved to 13-0 in the WCC Thursday with an 81-73 victory over Santa Clara.

Josh Heytvelt hit 12-of-17 shots for the second straight game and had a career-high 29 points against the Broncos. The senior forward scored 28 in the Zags’ 92-58 win over Pepperdine last Saturday as Gonzaga clinched the regular-season conference championship.

“I’ve got to give credit to the perimeter players,” Heytvelt said Thursday. “I’m not doing a whole lot different. They’re just finding me in good situations. Things come pretty easily when they do that.”

Heytvelt had 13 points and nine rebounds in a 64-47 win over visiting San Diego on Jan. 31.

A second straight victory over the Toreros this season would be Gonzaga’s sixth consecutive win overall and 15th in 16 games while capping off its third 14-0 conference record in six years. The Bulldogs went undefeated in WCC play in 2003-04 and 2005-06.

Pepperdine (1981-82, 1991-92) is the only other WCC program with two undefeated conference seasons since Seattle University left the conference prior to the 1980-81 season.

The Zags have additional motivation Saturday as they play a San Diego team that defeated them 69-62 in the 2008 WCC tournament title game. Gonzaga had won 13 in a row over the Toreros before that defeat.

Matt Bouldin was held to six points in that game, more than five below his career average, but enters this matchup coming off one of his best performances. The junior guard had 23 points Saturday, including a career-high 13 free throws in 15 attempts, as Gonzaga won its seventh straight game away from McCarthey Athletic Center.

“That was a great road win for us,” said Zags coach Mark Few, whose team will finish its regular season versus South Carolina Upstate on March 3 before playing in a WCC tournament semifinal next Sunday night in Las Vegas.

Few’s former assistant coach, Bill Grier, has led San Diego (15-14, 6-7) to back-to-back victories following three straight losses from Feb. 12-19. The Toreros won their third consecutive home game Thursday, 66-60 over Portland.

Sophomore Matt Dorr had a team-high 17 points against the Pilots while team leading scorer Gyno Pomare had 14. The senior forward had just six points in the Jan. 31 loss to then-No. 20 Gonzaga.

The Bulldogs lead the WCC in scoring - and rank 25th in Division I - with 78.5 points per game, but they will face a Toreros team allowing a conference-low 60.7 points per contest.

Gonzaga has won 23 of the last 25 meetings.
