(25) Xavier (21-6) at Dayton (19-9)

While Xavier hasn’t lost at home to Dayton in 30 years, it has lost two straight road games in this rivalry and the last one resulted in its most lopsided defeat since joining the Atlantic 10.

The 25th-ranked Musketeers go for a season high-tying seventh straight victory Sunday when they visit the Flyers.

Led by Tu Holloway’s 24 points, Xavier (21-6, 12-1) defeated Dayton 81-76 on Jan. 15 to match a conference record with its 34th straight home win. It also was the Musketeers’ 26th consecutive victory on its home floor versus the Flyers (19-9, 7-6) since Jan. 10, 1981.

Xavier has won 10 of 12 overall in this matchup but has lost its last two visits to Dayton by an average of 19.0 points.

The Flyers have a chance to drop the Musketeers into a tie for the conference lead a year after knocking them out of the top spot when the teams met in Dayton. That 90-65 loss was Xavier’s worst since joining the A-10 in 1995, though the Musketeers went on to win a fourth straight regular-season conference title.

Xavier, currently one-half game ahead of second-place Temple, enters this matchup having won six straight and 13 of 14. Coming off a lackadaisical 79-72 victory over league-worst Fordham on Feb. 19, the Musketeers routed La Salle 100-62 on Tuesday for their 39th consecutive league home win.

In the lineup for guard Mark Lyons, who was being disciplined by coach Chris Mack, Jeff Robinson scored a career-high 22 points in his first start in 19 games. Lyons had 15 off the bench.

“Jeff made a statement,” Mack said. “He was who he’s been in practice the past couple of weeks. That’s the best I’ve ever seen him.”

Holloway continues to impress the Musketeers’ second-year coach. The junior guard, among the conference leaders in scoring (20.3 points) and assists per game (5.6), fell one rebound shy of his second straight triple-double - and third this season - with 12 points and a career-high 15 assists Tuesday.

“Few players get one triple-double in their career, and that was going to be my third,” said Holloway, who exited the game with 2:36 remaining. “I’m not going to lie to you. I really wanted it, but we got the win and we got better as a team. That’s what’s important.”

Flyers starting guards Paul Williams and Juwan Staten will face a tough cover with Holloway, but they should be well-rested.

Dayton hasn’t played since Feb. 19, when it opened a three-game homestand with a 64-63 victory over Duquesne. Senior Devin Searcy had 14 points and 11 rebounds off the bench and Chris Johnson added 14 points.

Chris Wright is scoring a team-best 12.8 per game, but he has been saddled with foul trouble the last two games - playing 29 total minutes. Coach Brian Gregory might need the senior forward to log heavy minutes in this matchup against forward Jamel McLean and 7-footer Kenny Frease, who combine to average 23.0 points and 15.4 rebounds.

Frease had 20 points and McLean added 15 in last month’s victory over Dayton.

Wright recorded his first career double-double in that game with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He had 17 points and nine boards in Xavier’s last visit to Dayton, while Johnson scored 18.

The Flyers, one victory shy of a fifth straight 20-win season, are 82-71 all-time in this matchup.
