Another team that showed it had the right defensive stuff was Southern Illinois. A week after grinding out a 9-0 win over North Dakota State to earn an at-large playoff berth, the Salukis were at it again against Eastern Illinois, coming away with a 21-6 victory.

Arkee Whitlock rushed 23 times for 89 yards and three touchdowns to help SIU win this defensive struggle. The Saluki defense held Eastern Illinois to 100 yards rushing and 264 yards of total offense as SIU captured its first playoff win since winning the national championship in 1983.

Next up for Whitlock and the Salukis is a trip to Boone, N.C. to meet No. 2 seed Appalachian State. ASU overcame a nervous first-half and a well-prepared Lafayette club to weather out a 34-23 victory.

Lafayette played a near-perfect first half, holding a time of possession advantage of nearly 23-7 in building a 17-7 lead. But once Appalachian State got its offense on the field in the second half, the Mountaineers wore the Leopards out.

Richie Williams threw for three second-half touchdowns, two of them to tight end Daniel Bettis, and Kevin Richardson ran 24 times for 171 yards and another score. Lafayette helped it cause with a 2-1 turnover advantage in the first half, but the Leopards killed their chances with three turnovers in the second half.

10 large on SIU. SIU "USED" to have the best halloween parties of any colleges in the U.S., but it kept getting wilder and wilder until the government stepped in and made the college condemn it all. Fockers

Appalachain St might very well be the next seeded team to bite the dust, hmmmm?
A State was ranked #1 in the 1AA GPI index at season's end
GPI index is their power ratings
"The final regular season Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the BCS-style ranking for I-AA and top indicator of at-large playoff selection has a new No. 1 as Appalachian State edged into the top spot."

Southern Illinois won a share of its third straight Gateway Conference crown, sharing the title with Northern Iowa and Youngstown State. The Salukis have been in the top 10 in 33 of the last 34 weeks, falling to No. 11 on November 14. QB Joel Sambursky led SIU to a 21-6 win over Eastern Illinois last week. Sambursky was 15-of-21 for 189 yards passing with Arkee Whitlock scoring three rushing touchdowns in the win. Whitlock is already third in the SIU annals with his 1,359 rushing yards this season, and seventh in career rushing with 2,318 yards in just 23 games. Frank Johnson and Royal Whitaker each tallied 10 tackles against Eastern Illinois. Appalachian State claimed its first outright SoCon title since 1995 with a 52-14 win at Elon on November 19. The Mountaineers advanced to the quarterfinals with a 34-23 win over Lafayette. QB Richie Williams was 10-of-17 for 151 yards passing and three touchdowns and rushed for 32 yards. His 182 yards of total offense made him the all-time leader in SoCon history for career total offense, surpassing ETSU’s Todd Wells (1997-2000). Williams currently has 8,758 yards of total offense and needs one touchdown pass to tie Marshall’s Michael Payton (1989-92) for the league’s career TD mark of 57. RB Kevin Richardson led the offense with 171 yards rushing on 24 carries and one touchdown. Richardson is fourth in the league with 1,178 rushing yards and is 22 yards shy of becoming only the sixth player -- and eighth time overall - - in ASU history to rush for 1,200 yards in a season. TE Daniel Bettis was responsible for the two final touchdowns of the game, securing the Mountaineer win. LB Zodd Kelly and DB Jeremy Wiggins led the defense with 12 tackles apiece. Kelly added a sack and an interception while Omarr Byrom and Jason Hunter also added a sack each. Williams became only the second player in league history to record back-to-back seasons of 3,000-plus yards of total offense. He is sitting with 3,133 going into the game on Saturday, fifth in the SoCon annals, after recording 3,393 yards in 2004.
