The New Jersey Nets look to make it two straight to start the season when they host the Atlanta Hawks.
Despite a slow start, the Nets were able to rally to beat the Washington Wizards 90-84 in the season opener for both teams on Monday night. The Nets scored only seven points in the first quarter and trailed by as many as 21 points in the second, before going on a 16-2 run to turn things around. New Jersey then came out strong in the second half and ended up outscoring the Wizards by 14 to secure the come from behind win. Kris Humphries shrugged off the loud booing to lead the Nets with 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Deron Williams added 23 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Although the Hawks won 44 games last season and made the second round of the playoffs, they had a pretty poor season when you look a little deeper. They gave up more points than they scored and actually finished with a 10-17 record after the All-Star break. The second stat is the most concerning, considering the Hawks went backwards this offseason. They lost one of the top sixth men in the league in Jamal Crawford, who was replaced by Tracy McGrady. Plus with Kirk Hinrich now out for nearly half of the season through injury, Atlanta’s bench is one of the worst in the entire league.
Head to head, the Hawks are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings, but just 1-7 ATS in the last 8 meetings in New Jersey. The home team is 13-3 ATS in the last 16 meetings and the favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings. The Nets are just 21-43 ATS in their last 64 vs. Eastern Conference and 0-7 ATS in their last 7 home games.
Even though the Nets have been down in the last couple of seasons, they have played the Hawks tough and the home team has won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two. I understand the Hawks being favoured here, but they traditionally aren’t great road team, so I’m not sure why they favoured by a whole five points. If anything, the Nets playing last night should favour them because they got rid of some rust, and boy did they have a lot in the first quarter...
