The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the driver's seat in the AFC wild-card race heading into Sunday's interconference game against the hapless San Francisco 49ers.
With three games remaining, Jacksonville is a game ahead of Kansas City, San Diego and Pittsburgh for the two wild card spots.
The Jaguars can clinch their first playoff berth since 1999 with a victory over the Niners along with losses by Kansas City, San Diego and Pittsburgh this weekend.
Last season, the Jaguars narrowly missed the playoffs with a 9-7 record. They won three of their last four games, but a loss against Houston in Week 16 wound up costing them a playoff spot.
The Jaguars had their five-game winning streak stopped last Sunday with a 26-18 home loss to unbeaten Indianapolis.
Making his second start in place of injured Byron Leftwich, David Garrard completed 26-of-35 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on a five-yard run in the fourth quarter.
After this game, the Jaguars face Houston and Tennessee in the last two weeks. Those teams have a combined record of 5-21.
Jacksonville would seem to be able to get back on track against San Francsico, which has lost six straight games and has the NFL's second-worst record, one game better than Houston.
