Buzz Up PrintMemphis is showing plenty of balance in the early season despite losing three key players to the NBA.

The No. 13 Tigers look to move into the championship game of the Puerto Rico Season Tip-Off when they meet Seton Hall on Friday.

Memphis (3-0) advanced with an 83-71 victory over Chattanooga on Thursday. Doneal Mack scored 19 points and Shawn Taggart had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way.

Robert Dozier had 18 points and freshman Tyreke Evans added 11 for Memphis, which has five players averaging in double figures. The Tigers, last season’s national runners-up, are trying to replace the production of Derrick Rose, Chris Douglas-Roberts and Joey Dorsey - who were all selected in the NBA draft in June.

The Tigers shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field Thursday and led by as many as 19 points in bouncing back after shooting 39.0 percent (30-of-77) in Monday’s 80-58 win over Massachusetts.

Evans has faced plenty of scrutiny in the early season, since he is billed as a player with a similar amount of talent as the departed Rose. So far, he seems to be living up to those expectations, averaging a team-leading 16.3 points.

Memphis went 3-0 against Big East opponents last season, but hasn’t faced Seton Hall since 1974. The Tigers lead the series, 2-1.

Seton Hall (3-0) advanced by rallying from a 15-point halftime deficit to defeat No. 19 Southern California 63-61 on Thursday. Jeremy Hazell scored 17 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:20 left that put the Pirates ahead for good.

It was Seton Hall’s improved defense that helped turn the game around. USC shot 62.5 percent (16-of-27) in the first half before the Pirates limited the Trojans to 24.1 percent (7-of-29) after the break.

Eugene Harvey scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half and John Garcia added 11 points and 18 rebounds for the Pirates.

Seton Hall hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament in two seasons with Bobby Gonzalez as coach, and its play against ranked teams is a big reason why. The Pirates are just 1-10 versus Top 25 teams under Gonzalez.

The winner will face Xavier or Virginia Tech in the championship on Sunday.
