Mets and Cards set for NLCS
After Game 1 got rained out, both the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals are set to get their NLCS best-of-seven series going when they tangle at Shea Stadium Thursday.
The Cardinals snuck into the playoffs and got past the Padres in their divisional series in four games. They will send Jeff Weaver to the mound to start the series. Scott Rolen should be back for Game 1 and Jim Edmonds, Mark Mulder and bullpen sensation Jason Isringhausen are on the shelf.
Oddsmakers like the Mets in this one, opening the line at 170 in favor of New York. The total, which is 87-74-4 to the OVER in Mets games and 80-80-5 in Cardinals games, opened at 9.
The Mets swept the Dodgers in three straight games in their NLDS and have the best record of any of the teams left in the postseason. They have listed Tom Glavine as the starter for today's game. The Mets are also plagued with injuries as pitchers Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez are hurting while Cliff Floyd is bothered by a strained ACL.
The Mets staff is stingy with baserunners, allowing fewer men to reach base than just about every team in the league. St. Louis needs to get to Glavine and into the bullpen to make things happen today.
