Buffalo (30-15-3) at Toronto (24-21-3) 7:30 pm EST
TORONTO (Ticker) -- Mats Sundin and the Toronto Maple Leafs hope to avoid their longest losing streak in nine years when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.
The Maple Leafs were swept in a home-and-away series with the Ottawa Senators and have dropped six straight since a 3-2 triumph over Edmonton on January 7.
With a loss Thursday, Toronto would match its longest losing streak since a seven-game skid from January 3-20, 1997.
Sundin has been one of the main culprits over the recent slide. The Maple Leafs captain and third all-time leading goal scorer has just one tally and five assists over his last eight games.
Toronto looks to rebound from its 4-3 loss to Ottawa on Monday. Sundin set up Nik Antropov's late goal to cut the Maple Leafs' deficit to one, but the Senators held on.
Buffalo is coming off a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over the New York Rangers on Tuesday.
Ales Kotalik assisted on the Sabres' first goal to record his 100th career point and netted the tie-breaking tally in the third period.
Ryan Miller made 23 saves for Buffalo, which lost leading scorer Tim Connolly to a knee injury.
In the final minute of the second period, Connolly received a hip check along the right wing boards from Rangers defenseman Darius Kasparaitis, who is infamous for his marginal hits. After being attended to by team trainers, Connolly returned to Buffalo's bench but did not come out for the third period.
"(Kasparaitis) just went low. It's a cheap shot," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "I'm upset. If you look at it, he went low on (Connolly). ... For us to lose a player like that because he wants to go low and cut his knees out, that's a joke."
Connolly initially has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 knee injury and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.
"We won't know until further tests," Ruff said. "But I think they need an MRI to see what the MCL or ACL looks like in that situation. His knee is loose and the initial thought is he shouldn't need surgery.
"It's a big loss. Timmy was pretty well leading the team in ice time and power play, penalty-killing. That's a big loss."
In 48 games this season, Connolly has nine goals and 29 assists, tying him with Chris Drury for the team lead in points.
