According to articles i've read on these studies, they all used 20-40gmwith low caloric intake(1000-1600kcal). There have been no studies using the recommended dose of 5g, which is based on dose-response curves from the animal studies. I believe they recommed the 5g dose for cost costing, since the 20-40g doses will cost about $6-14/day. Also a note, it's suggested to take zinc and b5 with the pyruvate to help metabolism and convert the pyruvate. Hope this sheds some light. TEX
