On December 27, 1995, the FDA approved a new drug for the treatment of advanced breast
cancer. The drug, Arimidex (generic name is anastrozole), is manufactured by Zeneca
Pharmaceuticals. It is the first in a new class of third-generation selective oral aromatase inhibitors
for the treatment of advanced breast cancer (in postmenopausal women) whose disease has
progressed following treatment with tamoxifen. It works by reducing the amount of estrogen the
body produces.
