: Have you ever made DNP that way yourself? You don't need a solvent for the
: merc nit and the benzene? And if you don't, shouldn't the merc nitrate be
: added dropwise to a stirred benzene. Oxymercuration should be done at room
: temp. and should be allowed to complete before adding the nitric acid?
Never done this myself. I have some reference material that I could fax to you
if you are intent on doing this. The mercuric nitrate, benzene, and nitric acid are
all added at once and heated with stirring to drive the reaction.
: I think I can do the birch rx using liquid ammonia from a cylinder and I'm going
: to look up those patents. I don't forsee any difficult distillation or equipment
: for using this technique. The hardest part will be getting the liquid ammonia
: cylinder as everything else is rather common if expensive.

more power to you. It just seems like a total bitch to me. Hope you have the basic
lab equipment and a way to remove vapors.
