: Nandrolone is made from the methyl ether of estradiol by a method

Take liquid ammonia from a cylinder that has been turned upside down. After the flask is about 1/2 full you put in the lithium turnings or lithium wire that was under ether and you get the blue solution. Add THF or ether, then the estradiol. Let react....blah, blah, blah. That isn't too hard, but I am going to go look it up as to check the yields. Additionally, when mercury(II) nitrate is added to benzene you don't need any solvents to dissolve the alkene? Have you actually done this experiment as the mercury(II) nitrate would start reacting right away? It seems that you would want to add the merc nit dropwise and have an excess of benzene? Just a thought. Anarchy in the USA!
