I had somebody ask me the other day whether they can ever be a serious bodybuilder by working out at their home. Well this is an obvious one, but you also have to consider that he has home gym equipment, and he wants to save money by avoiding the gym membership. So I thought it would be interesting to weigh the pros and cons of working out at home vs. buying a gym membership.
Gym Membership Pros
- All of the machines are in one place and already set up to use.
- You can work out with a partner.
- You don't have to take up space at home with workout equipment.
- It's safer lifting in a gym than at home by yourself.
- You'll have more motivation to work out seriously with other people around.
Gym Membership Cons
- Gym memberships can be costly.
- The equipment can be taken up on busy days.
- Some people at the gym are annoying.
- The gym tries to push supplements, personal trainers, etc. on you.
Working Out at Home Pros
- You can listen to the music you want as loud as you want.
- There are no annoying people around.
- You save money (as long as you're not buying expensive equipment).
- The equipment is always open.
- You don't have to drive to the gym.
Working Out at Home Cons
- Lifting by yourself can be dangerous.
- There's no one around to motivate you.
- No hot women to check out or talk to.
- You waste time by setting up machines, weights etc.
- Workout equipment crowds your house.
- There are distractions at your house (i.e. TV, computer, food).
Overall, a gym membership is the way to go if you've got the money.
