The recent apprehension of a cage fighter who used steroids has many people questioning just how prevalent the use of roids is in the sport of mixed martial arts.
Many fans of fighting sports love to debate about which one is king in terms of skill, talent, and general popularity. The sport of boxing certainly has a storied history filled with amazing athletes who battled in unforgettable bouts. Kickboxing has the added dimension of allowing fighters to throw kicks along with punches and this makes for some very unpredictable fights marked by ferocious knockouts. And wrestling is an extremely popular Olympic sport and has an excellent high school participation rate in some countries.
But even though all of these combative sports have their great athletes and memorable moments, the general consensus is that none of them are the top dog. That’s because no fighting sport has gained as much steam in recent years as mixed martial arts. Most people will agree that mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes are the best all-around fighters in the world due to their mastery of multiple disciplines that include wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, and other fighting forms as well.
And many people would also agree that the use of steroids is really not prevalent in the sport of MMA. They say that the usage of roids in mixed martial arts isn’t possible because the fighters just aren’t big enough or ripped enough to be juicing. Also, there are tests run before sanctioned bouts which include blood work, x-rays, and drug screenings, which further rules out the possibility of MMA being subject to steroid use.
However, if there’s one thing that the usage of drugs like Human Growth Hormone in football and baseball has taught us is that there is always a path around steroid testing. And going even further, the simple appearance of an athlete doesn’t rule out the possibility that they could be taking performance enhancing drugs that have been deemed illegal by their sport.
Just take a look at mixed martial arts competitor Buckley Acosta, the latest cage fighter to test positive for steroids. The Newberry Springs, California native is a relative newcomer to the sport of MMA cage fighting and has just five bouts under his belt but has made big waves in the media with his recent admittance to the usage of steroids. However, one would never know that he was a juicer merely by appearances alone.
Buckley Acosta’s build is somewhat average and even looks below average when compared to most other mixed martial arts competitors. He’s not ripped nor does he look extremely imposing physically. Acosta is just a normal looking guy who happens to have a good MMA background. He also happens to now have a steroid possession charge to add to his name as well.
Acosta’s trouble began in late July when a package filled with injectable testosterone-based steroids was being tracked by U.S. Customs officers. Authorities were tracking the box from Central America all the way to Barstow, California. It is here where U.S. Customs officials alerted members of the Barstow Police Department of the package’s destination. And its destination just happened to be the motorcycle shop where Buckley Acosta worked.
After obtaining a search warrant, customs officials collaborated with the Barstow police to go after the package. Together, they raided the motorcycle shop, arrested Acosta, and nabbed the box. Once authorities confiscated the package, they found 12 loaded syringes which gave them a solid case against Buckley. And with the amount of steroids that was concealed within the package, prosecutors had enough evidence to push for a felony charge against Acosta which meant possible prison time.
Luckily for Buckley though, his case wouldn’t come to all of this as he escaped having to go to jail with a plea bargain. The 27 year-old fighter received a much lighter sentence that included probation and participation in a drug treatment program. But despite the fact that it appears Buckley Acosta may be temporarily off of the hook, the sport of mixed martial arts as a whole faces a different scenario.
MMA will once again be under a watchful eye by sports doping bodies after this latest bust and it will be interesting to see if any other positive tests turn up as they have in the past. One of the best known positive tests in the sport came when UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia tested positive for Stanozolol after a successful title fight in UFC 44.
After his results came back, Sylvia was stripped of his Heavyweight Championship belt and given a suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Sylvia isn’t the only popular cage fighter to get nabbed for steroids as the heavily-tattooed Kimo Leopoldo also was handed a suspension for testing positive for the very same drug that Sylvia had in his system, Stanozolol.
The list of famous UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fighters that have been busted for steroids doesn’t stop here though as former champion Josh Barnett was also caught for using roids as well. This brings to mind the question: Why are all of these UFC fighters testing positive for steroids when the biggest cage fighting organization, Pride Fighting Championship, hasn’t had these problems?
That’s because the Japan-based Pride Fighting doesn’t really even test for steroid use. They do screen athletes for the use of illegal stimulants but that’s the limit of their testing. With the lack of testing on mixed martial arts’ biggest stage, many people have been prompted to wonder just how rampant steroid use is in the sport.
After all, these fighters are allowed to go pretty much unchecked in the way of what substances they use and have nothing standing in the way of their juicing. Even some UFC fighters like Josh Barnett have switched over to Pride Fighting where they won’t have to deal with the tough steroid policies that exist in the UFC.
So will Pride Fighting be forced to adopt a tougher stance towards MMA steroid testing or will they be allowed to retain their lax standards on drug screenings? I hope for the sake of the fighters that they will be able to continue the trend of avoiding steroid testing in Pride Fighting. I’d even go as far as to wish for a more laid-back approach by the UFC and other cage fighting promotions to steroid testing.
And the reason why is simple. Going beyond the traditional “bigger, faster, stronger” argument that is all in the best interest of entertaining the fans, cage fighters and other mixed martial arts competitors need steroids in order to heal their bodies after bouts more than anything. Yes roids will improve a fighter’s physical prowess but more importantly, it will help them to survive in a sport that regularly sees broken bones, severe cuts, and pulled muscles.
Unfortunately, it seems as if mixed martial arts is moving in the same direction as a lot of the traditional sports such as baseball, basketball, and football. The UFC’s rigid take on steroid use is just the tip of the iceberg and Japan’s zero tolerance view on roids may one day cause Pride Fighting to cave in to testing. In fact, there may come a time when all of MMA will test before every single bout. And in a sport that is as vicious as mixed martial arts, that’s not a good thing.
