Random steroid testing in football is usually something that is reserved for multi-million dollar NFL teams and big-time college football programs. However, this may all change after police in the small town of Menomonie, Wisconsin turned up disturbing evidence in an investigation of a tiny Wisconsin college.
We’ve all seen the movies and TV shows that depict the grim realities of what goes on behind the scenes of professional and major college football. Films such as Any Given Sunday and The Program as well as TV series like Playmakers have given the average, beer guzzling, pigskin junkie a glimpse of the money, greed, cheating, and corruption that lie at the heart of America’s favorite game.
Drugs, steroids, groupies, contract disputes, locker room fights, illegal recruiting, and booster money dished out to college players are often portrayed in these highly dramatic football productions. And while the amount of this that really goes on in football may be overstated in these shows, we all know that some of this stuff goes on within every high-profile team to some extent.
But no one would ever expect these types of things to be present on a small-time college football team where non-scholarship players are actually paying thousands of dollars a year just to attend the university. At least that’s what common knowledge would tell us as Division III football athletes have virtually no chance of ever seeing the bright lights of NFL stadiums and tend to focus more on their education than the gridiron.
However, this image that me and many other people used to have of the seemingly wholesome Division III game was shattered when Menomonie, Wisconsin authorities uncovered some shocking and incriminating evidence against members of the University of Wisconsin-Stout football team recently.
The case broke open when Menomonie police raided the home of Wisconsin-Stout senior linebacker Luke Steffen and seized an assortment of drugs including three bottles of liquid steroids. Steffen, who led the team in tackles last year, admitted to police that his house had been used often by different people who used, bought, packaged, and stored different drugs including steroids, cocaine, and marijuana.
This wasn’t the end though as Wisconsin authorities would make another discovery after they raided a second house that was occupied by a junior linebacker named Nicholas OrRico. Inside OrRico’s home, the police found more liquid steroids such as the ones found in Steffen’s home.
In addition to all of this, a former player named John Henry Freeman III was arrested in conjunction with the case after he sold an undercover informant cocaine on two separate occasions.
This is not exactly the type of news that you’d expect to be coming from a small college with an enrollment of 8400 students that prides itself on its polytechnic background which emphasizes the usage of applied learning, scientific theory, and research to help grow the state’s economy and better serve society.
Not taking the news lying down though, a UW-Stout committee that was formed to deal with this problem decided that the best course of action was to require all of the team’s 100 football players to be tested for drugs like cocaine and marijuana for next season along with a quarter of the team who will undergo testing for steriods.
The testing will go beyond just the football team too as UW-Stout plans to randomly test athletes from the school’s other sports and make them attend sessions on the harmful effects of substance abuse. Speaking on behalf of the university’s decision to extend the testing even further, UW-Stout faculty member Doug Mell said, “The point is to make sure that when athletes step on the field from here on in they will be drug free and everybody can be assured of that.”
But Mell’s statements may not necessarily cover what the true motivations behind Stout becoming the first Division III college to regularly perform drug testing on its athletes. After all, the school’s announcement came a day after authorities were thinking of taking their investigation even further than just the couple of players who were arrested.
This was evidenced by Dunn County District Attorney James Peterson saying, “You\'ve got a couple of people associated with the football program in possession of steroids. I just wonder how much more extensive it is than that. I\'m very concerned about the proliferation of steroids in sports and the serious long-term side effects for those who use them.”
Whether or not the investigation continues even further into the team is unknown at this point. However, you can be assured that a small Division III football team deciding to impose random steroid and drug testing upon its athletes is sure to shake up collegiate sports at all levels. It really makes one stop and think, how long before every team in every college sport is testing its players. It’s probably not far off.
