We all know that the government wastes people’s tax dollars. But recent high school sports drug and steroid testing has taken wasteful spending to a new level! You’ll be shocked at how much money they wasted on bogus sports testing that does not even work.
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t exactly agree on how our tax dollars are spent by the government. And how our tax dollars get spent drug and steroid testing athletes is a prime example. But first, here's a few hilarious examples of what our federal taxes have funded.
The Department of Education spent $34 million to teach people to become better shoppers. I’m glad my money is going to help those who can’t control their shopping sprees.
The Commerce Department’s US Travel and Tourism Administration handed over $440,000 to ski resorts under the guise of “disaster relief” because there wasn’t much snow on the ground. We all know how much of a disaster it can be when the slopes aren’t full of crisp, white snow.
In the name of the golfer relief fund, the Pentagon spent $5.1 million to build a new golf course at Andrews Air Force Base in suburban Washington D.C. The kicker is that there are already 19 military golf courses around the D.C. area. Luckily a Pentagon spokesperson ‘cleared up’ the wasteful spending by letting everyone know that the courses get pretty crowded on the weekend.
The CIA and Pentagon paid around $11 million to psychics who could possibly provide information about foreign threats (Stargate program). Now I can see how Miss Cleo manages to stay in business.
$440,000 is spent a year so that workers can push buttons on elevators used by senators and representatives on Capitol Hill. After all, we wouldn’t want our lawmakers suffering any carpal tunnel injuries from pushing those pesky elevator buttons too much.
I could go on forever, but the point is that the government is like a rich kid with too much money on its hands: they don’t know what to do with it all so they just blow it on stupid stuff and drug and steroid sports testing of athletes is no different. But what trumps all of the stupid things that the government blows money on is the latest drug and steroid sports testing of athletes program that I’ve seen...
This program revolves around what else but steroid testing, and it’s being run by the state of Texas’ University Interscholastic League. Texas and the University Interscholastic League started this program because they bought into the hype that tons of teenage athletes are using anabolic steroids in an attempt to gain an edge on their competition and therefore they need extensive drug and steroid sports testing of these teenage athletes. So what were the results of this extensive testing?
Well in the fall of 2009, the UIL drug tested 3,133 Texas athletes and found that an astounding 2 people out of the mix were taking steroids. If you’re at all decent at long division, you’ll find that the UIL busted .0006 percent of the athletes they drug tested. Now the next question is what the costs of sports testing 3,133 athletes in order to catch a grand total of two.
And the answer is sports testing 3,133 athletes cost Texas taxpayers a cool $2 million. Do a little more math and that sports testing cost us $1 million per positive test. Now I don’t want to keep coming off as some anarchist government basher who thinks we’d all be better off in communes, but this seems like a huge waste of money to me.
The Texas government could have put the money used for drug testing athletes towards helping a few schools that are having budget crises. After all, it seems like every other year that the school system in my district is threatening to cut all extracurricular activities if people don’t pass the latest school levy. Some other things that the money could’ve been used for is hiring (or not firing) new teachers, purchasing classroom supplies for schools, adding more space to overcrowded schools, and/or providing students with more free lunches.
This is just a short list of things that Texas could have spent the money on that would have been better than blowing $2 million drug testing athletes just to catch two steroid users.
The whole reason why the sports-crazed state of Texas originally passed this steroid testing program and worked with the UIL drug testing athletes was because of the frenzy going on sports testing professional athletes. For some reason, they thought since some professional athletes who have million dollar contracts on the line were taking steroids, high school athletes who get paid nothing were juicing too and in need of steroid testing.
But in reality, all the sports testing proves is that hardly any teenagers are juicing in order to get a leg up on others athletes. And while spending $1 million sports testing just to catch a single juicer should be reason enough to scrap the program, it doesn’t look like the UIL or state of Texas has any plans to stop sports testing any time soon.
Personally, I think that high school steroid testing just shows how far the anti-steroid mind set has trickled down. Negativity towards steroids got worse after Congress got involved with Major League Baseball’s steroid issue, and now we’re spending ridiculous amounts of money steroid testing to ensure that a couple of high school athletes aren’t using steroids.
What’s next? Will we start testing middle school athletes for steroids? After that, we’d better start cracking down on elementary students who could be juicing just to dominate their YMCA basketball league.
