People love using the world famous website MySpace.com to find old friends and to pick up hot babes as well! However, few people realize that they can easily find steroids here too. This was uncovered after an FBI sting revealed several shocking stories including one involving a high school English teacher.
Friends have been telling me about MySpace.com for quite a while now but I’ll admit that it took some time before I joined. After having it described to me, I thought to myself that this sounds like something that only teenage girls would be into. And unless they’re 18 or 19, I’m not exactly too thrilled about fraternizing with teenage girls so I decided to pass on joining.
Boy was I missing out on a lot! I didn’t realize that you could easily find old friends that you thought you’d never see again with a simple name search or high school search. And more importantly, I didn’t know that you can also meet hot women from all over the world through MySpace. I mean how cool is it that I can find a hot blonde from Switzerland when I’m all the way in New York. Here\'s a link to my new MySpace page: www.myspace.com/georgespellwin. I hope you\'ll sign up to be my friend. Would you believe that Tila Tequila is a friend? How cool is that?
Something else I didn’t realize that was of even greater interest to me was how easy it is to find steroid dealers on MySpace.com. This was revealed in a series of recent FBI stings collectively called Operation Phony Pharm that targeted people who were selling steroids through their MySpace.com web pages.
Operation Phony Pharm was an operation that began in Connecticut after the FBI’s Healthcare Fraud Unit became suspicious of certain individuals during an investigation. This investigation eventually included help from the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The plan for the authorities was to go after websites that were selling scheduled II and III pharmaceuticals over the Internet without a doctor’s consultation or a legal written prescription from a doctor. After time, the operation’s targets grew to include underground steroid labs that were purchasing raw materials from outside of the United States with the intention of making illegal drugs.
So you may be asking, “What does all of this have to do with MySpace.com?” Well the combined efforts of these agencies were able to turn over a huge stone in the fact that they discovered some steroid dealers who had been using the popularity of MySpace in order to find customers.
With over 200 million MySpace users worldwide, dealers know that they are bound to find some interested prospects out there on this social networking site. And that’s just what four men who were recently nabbed in Operation Phony Pharm were thinking when they decided to take their business online.
Edwin Porter and Michael Peltz, both of Chandler, Arizona; Tyler Lunn, of Phoenix, Arizona; and Walter T. Corey, of Cherleroi, Pennsylvania were all indicted on charges of distribution of anabolic steroids and conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids.
Authorities allege that these four men purchased raw materials from China and used them to manufacture steroids in their home-based laboratories. They then created a MySpace profile and used this along with a website called anabolic-superstore.com to sell their finished products.
One thing about this case that was particularly shocking to many people was that Michael Peltz was heavily involved with this steroid operation. Peltz had taught high school English in Arizona before he got into manufacturing and distributing the steroids. Now Peltz, Corey, and Lunn could face up to 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of $750,000 if found guilty. Porter faces up to 20 years and a $1,000,000 fine if convicted since he lied to the FBI during the investigation.
But the Arizona and Pennsylvania crew weren’t the only ones who have been busted as a result of Operation Phony Pharm. Alan Blair of Wilton, Connecticut pleaded guilty to the distribution of Human Growth Hormone from 2004 to 2007. He had sold HGH to his customers through the popular online site jintropin.com and it was shipped to them directly from supplier in China. After pleading guilty, Blair had to forfeit $260,000 of profits he made during the three year time period.
Another MySpace perpetrator who went down was Brian Tompkins of Deltona, Florida. Tompkins had been distributing anabolic steroids to people in the mail from 2006 to 2007 through his MySpace page. He and Blair both face a maximum prison term of five years and a $250,000 fine.
In the wake of this crackdown on MySpace and Internet website steroid dealers, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut Kevin J. O’Connor weighed in on the matter by saying, “The dangers associated with the improper use of steroids and human growth hormone are well documented. However, this investigation has helped to shed light on additional troubling concerns, including the manufacture of these drugs in unsanitary kitchen and basement labs, and their subsequent sale on Web sites, many of which are frequented by minors.”
He went on to say that, “Of particular concern to us is obviously the use of profiles on MySpace.com, which gives us concern that this might in fact be a way to market to minors or children. Some of the methods that we\'ve uncovered in this investigation lead us to conclude that it may not just be adults that are being marketed to.”
O’Connor finished his warning by mentioning, “If they\'re minors, we want to give them a wake-up call, let their parents know what their kids are doing. Certainly it wouldn\'t be surprising, I don\'t think, if kids are using steroids based on what we know today.”
And if there are kids who are being sold steroids over MySpace web pages, this is terrible. And people in general shouldn’t begin juicing until they are knowledgeable about what they are doing and ideally can do so under a doctor\'s supervision. I also agree with O’Connor that roids and HGH manufactured in unsanitary conditions are dangerous as well since a person could get hurt, maimed, or even killed using bogus gear.
However, I do, at some point, have to question just how much of this operation was really about keeping steroids away from young kids and making sure that dealers aren’t hurting people by selling bad steroids. I almost wonder if this operation wasn’t just a way for the government to tie in one of the top ten websites in the world with illegal steroid dealing just to get some more press for their war on steroids.
After all, I’m sure that there are plenty of other types of illegal drug dealing going on with regards to MySpace profiles but I don’t hear about any operations being formed to go after these people. And with the reaction that these federal agencies have gotten after taking down some MySpace steroid dealers, you can expect to see more of the same in upcoming months.
And remember, here\'s a link to my new MySpace page: www.myspace.com/georgespellwin still very much a work in progress. I hope you\'ll sign up to be my friend.
