Looking through the Lens of Alex Ardenti:Worldwide Acclaimed Photographer whowill be working with Elitefitness.com!
Whether you\'re in a grocery or convenience store checkout isle, there’s a good chance that you’ve probably been captivated by some babe on the cover of a fitness magazine at one time or another in your life. And I can’t say I blame you as these girls always seem to somehow look better than any woman that you’ll ever see in public - with their incredible bodies and perfect stomachs to match. And ladies’ viewing pleasures aren’t left out either as there always seems to be some ripped stud with impossible-to-build muscles and perfect tan looking powerful next to these gorgeous women. But how do these cover models look so amazing? It must just be genetics or the fact that they are extremely devoted in the gym, right?
Well this is partially true, but these people need a lot more than just a good genes and a tireless work ethic to make it to the cover of a magazine. It takes lots of confidence, a camera-friendly personality, tons of perseverance, possibly some cosmetic surgery, probably some steroids, and, first and foremost, the help of an extremely gifted photographer. One such as my friend Alex Ardenti, whose photography will soon be featured on EliteFitness.com.
If you’re not familiar with Alex’s work then let me bring you up to speed on his very impressive portfolio which you can find in his gallery on EliteFitness.com or at his websites AlexArdenti.com and AlexArdenti.net. He’s worked with numerous fitness and swimsuit models such as Trish Stratus, Cori Nadine, Rachel Moore, and Leeann Tweeden, Playboy hotties Torrie Wilson and Jennifer Walcott, musclemen Dexter “The Blade” Jackson and Mark Andrews, as well as high-profile athletes like former figure skater and gold medalist Tara Lipinski and boxer Oscar De La Hoya.
Still not satisfied? Well then how about some of the other celebrities that have been captured by his lens like Sylvester Stalone, Montel Williams, Kevin Sorbo, Traci Bingham, Shemar Moore, and Nicole Eggert. Oh wait, there’s one more. Former Mr. Universe, mega-movie star, and Governor of California Arnold Swarzenegger.
For many people, just seeing these celebrities walk by on the street would be a truly exhilarating moment in their life. One that would leave the average person with an incredible story to tell family and friends. But to even consider talking to, much less working with a person of Sylvester Stalone or Arnold Swarzenegger’s caliber might be seen as a truly intimidating event. However, 15 years of photography experience has given Alex Ardenti a different view on the subject.
In fact, photographing celebrities actually creates a lot less headaches for Alex. As he told me, “Working with a celebrity is actually easier for a photographer. You don’t need to direct them as much because they know exactly what to do for the camera and most of the time they know their best angle. I’ve had a great experience with all the celebs”.
Alex’s interesting view on working with celebrities was never more true than when he did a photo shoot with Arnold Swarzenegger. “Arnold was the best. He insisted that I get in a picture with him at the end of our shoot. That was a nice compliment.”
A nice compliment indeed and one that is indicative of the amount of respect given by those who’ve been photographed by Alex. But you may be wondering how he developed the type of camera skills that has attracted all of these celebs to his services. For that, we must dive into his well-traveled past.
Alex Ardenti was born in Rome, Italy and, at the age of 3, moved along with his family to Wollongong, Australia. Australia’s beautiful landscapes served as the perfect setting for Alex to hone his future craft along with his soundless Super 8mm camera and instamatic still camera. While some kids grow up with their toys, Alex grew up with his cameras. He carried his cameras everywhere he went and often made his own make-believe movies.
At an early age, when watching TV, he was quickly able to discern the difference between what a professional video shot looked like when compared to a cheesy, low-quality shot. But when Alex moved back to Rome, he didn’t even bother taking his video camera out of the box because the family projector was broken, leaving him with little incentive to shoot movies that no one could watch.
Alex would soon lay down his still camera as well, thankfully only temporarily, in favor of a new passion he had developed. Starting at the age of 12, the skinny Alex began hitting the weights. Weight training became an obsession for him and eventually culminated with him winning the professional Mr. Italy and Mr. Europe titles as a teenager!
His newfound success in the bodybuilding world led him to explore new career avenues as a model and actor. Alex’s appearances in fitness magazines led to his move to California, a state which he fell in love with. It is here where his brief acting career began. Most of his acting gigs revolved around doing commercials for companies such as Miracle Whip, Miller Lite, and Blockbuster as well as very brief television appearances. After struggling for a few years doing commercials and one-liners on TV, he began to re-discover his love for working behind the camera.
Alex’s success came quickly as he was soon working for some of the top agencies in Los Angeles while, at the same time, seeing his shots grace the covers of numerous fitness magazines. He developed a superb reputation not only within the California photography community but worldwide as well. As his finances grew, so did his high profile career. A career that has allowed him to rub elbows with major stars and has brought him many accolades and rewards.
So what is the biggest reward a top-notch photographer like Alex Ardenti derives from his work? The easy answer for most people would be getting to meet celebrities and see your shots on the cover of a magazine. However, Alex sees a deeper, much more intrinsic reward behind his work. He says, “The most rewarding thing is to look at an image that I created from scratch. When I have complete control of the lighting and styling I get a kick out of creating a scene where there was none before.”
Some of you may be as clueless as I was as to how he creates such a scene. But Alex kindly filled me in on how the process works by saying, “You need to shoot the subject with a cover in mind. Cropping is very important. All the elements need to come together at the same time to create a magical shot: lighting, pose, expression, attitude, body language etc. etc. I know what the mags want after 15 years in the biz.”
I learned that not just any photographer can bring all these various elements together. In fact, Alex pointed out that, “Many very good photographers are never able to get a cover.” Alex is definitely not one of these photographers though as he averages 7 covers a month! His work ethic is unquestionable too since he currently contributes to over 30 publications worldwide.
But as can always be seen with people at the top of their profession, Alex has started to lose just a little bit of his hunger for photography. “Magazine covers are always nice but the excitement has worn off a bit.” So in order to recharge his ambitions for behind the camera work, Alex has begun to return to his childhood hobby of movie directing.
Although his decision to pursue directing was quick, Alex has puts countless hours into learning and practicing the art of film making. He summed up his recent efforts by telling EliteFitness.com that “Movies and photos are my passion. I\'ve been an actor also for 25 years but I know that my true talents are behind the camera. I wrote, produced and directed “Leftovers” which was accepted in the finals at the Los Angeles International Film Festival. It is a short film, shot on HD and blown up to 35 mm for theater projection.”
He hasn’t limited his directing to just films though as he’s also been busy with commercials too. “At the moment I am working on my commercial reel and I am doing as many commercials as I possibly can. I like the concept of telling a story or conveying a feeling or emotion in just 30 seconds. My wife, Stephanie Richards, is working on a screenplay that I will be directing but until then it will be commercials and possibly music videos.”
Even with the monumental efforts that Alex has been putting towards directing, he won’t be laying down the still camera yet. As he stated on his website, AlexArdenti.com, “Commercial still photography pays the bills, and then some. So I don’t see myself abandoning it anytime soon.”
In fact, Alex is still very committed to his photography as he is also working heavily with website designer Jim Dinardo on member site AlexArdenti.net, which is now up and running. Alex laid out the basic concept of his latest website by telling me, “It’s a members only site for a low price that shows some of the world’s best fitness models and will have images and video not published in magazines.” What he didn’t tell me is that you’ll get some never before seen photos of some of the sexiest women alive like Kat Stalter, Amy Fadhli, Monica Brant and many more.
