Rob Riches is one of the top bodybuilders in the world and he’s also graced the pages of countless fitness and muscle magazines. Riches recently opened up to George Spellwin in his most in-depth and revealing interview ever. See Riches’ journey to bodybuilding, his advice on bodybuilding competitions, and how a champion bodybuilder should eat in Part I of this interview!
Rob Riches: Back when I was 25 years old, I was still trying to find a decent paying job, learn how to live on my own without mommy’s help, and figure out how to cook something without burning up the kitchen. It’s safe to say that I was the exact opposite of Rob Riches who, at this age, has accomplished more in his bodybuilding and fitness modelling career than most people in the same industry will in their entire lifetime.
As a bodybuilder, Riches has already won numerous bodybuilding shows and placed 4th in the British Natural Bodybuilding Federation Finals twice. Riches’ personal training skills are well documented too as he won the Bodybuilding.com “Personal Trainer of the Year Award.” You may have even seen Riches featured in some of the most popular fitness magazines such as Muscle & Fitness, Ironman, FAME Magazine, and Body. Rob is a very accomplished film maker too as he edited and produced videos for himself, as well as other fitness models and companies such as LA Muscle.
Recently, I was lucky enough to get a hold of Riches for an interview which turned out to be his most in-depth and revealing interview yet. During the first part of this interview, Rob told me about his incredible journey into the sport of bodybuilding which included a terrible injury, some amazing competition advice that you certainly don’t want to miss, how he handles training for competitions and modelling, and exactly how one should eat if they want to get a truly ripped physique.

Throughout your earlier years, you participated in a number of sports before finding your calling with bodybuilding after a mountain biking accident. Can you tell us about this journey towards bodybuilding?
Rob Riches: When I was growing up, my cousin who is 4 years older than me was always involved in sports such as windsurfing, skiing, volleyball, and football. I looked up to him as the older brother I never had, and always tried to follow in his choice of sports. Bu he lived by the coast (South of England) and was in a prime location for many of these sports. I lived much more inland, away from the coast, which meant I found it difficult to enjoy many of these sports as I lived in a very mountainous terrain.
It wasn’t long before I started taking my mountain bike off-road and, after a few falls and tumbles, soon found my feet. I enjoyed the rush of adrenaline of racing down a rocky terrain, but also liked how my legs started to look after only a few months of hard riding. By the time I was 14, I had already entered a few national racers, winning one, and placing well in the rest. My taste for winning in a competition had begun!
I remember one day during the summer, I went out with a friend to film some video of me mountain biking. After filming several cool stunts one didn’t quite go as planned and a bad landing resulted in me flipping over the front of the bike, landing on my shoulder, and hearing a cracking sound as I hit the floor; I had broken my left clavicle (the small bone at the top of the chest going into the shoulder).
After several months with my arm immobile, I was aching to be out riding again, jumping and racing down big hills. After 3 months, I finally got back on my bike, but found I didn’t have the strength to perform many of the old tricks I had been doing. During the time I was out of action, I had suffered muscle atrophy in my shoulder and left arm. It was the first time I had heard that word, and wanted to know how I could get back on my bike and riding at the level I was used to. I was told that lifting weights would help me build up my strength again, but I was only 15 and was still too young to join a gym and start using the machines. I felt my age was always holding me back, and couldn’t wait until I turned 16 before I could start lifting.
I turned to the fitness magazines I had seen in the stores when I was buying my biking mags, hoping that they could help me learn more about what exercises I needed to do for me to get back on my bike. I begged my mum to let me get some weights at home in the garage, and it just so happened that my cousin had an old bench and a few weights that he said he’d give me to help me workout. My love affair with the cold touch of steel had begun, and I started following the exercise plans in the magazines. But there was so much information that I was drowned with what I should be doing. Fortunately for me, my luck was in as my window cleaner was at the time – the World Champion Powerlifter.
I remember the first thing I asked him: what do I need to do to get big arms and a six pack like the guys in the magazines? He smiled and started to tell me about building a balanced physique, and that I needed to train my legs just as much as my back, my chest, and my shoulders as well as my arms and abs. He taught me about the difference between cardio (and when I should do it in relation to lifting weights) and weight training, as well as proper nutrition and supplementation.
It was a lot of information for me to take in, but I found myself eager to learn more. The following week, he took me along to his local weights gym, and showed me some basic exercises that I should learn as the foundation of my program. (These later turned out to be the classic compound movements; Squat, Deadlift, Clean and Press, and Bench Press).
By this time, I had built up enough strength again to ride my bike again, but instead of racing it down hillsides I was using it to get to and from the gym each night after school. Months went by as I learned more and more from the guys who worked out there, many of whom were bodybuilders. My body was starting to transform, and I was building a physique. By my 16th birthday, I had achieved my goal of having abs and defined biceps. I was getting notice and appraisal not just from my friends at school, but also from the teachers. My love affair with bodybuilding was now in full swing, yet now that I had reached my goal, I was ready for the next milestone.
