Anybody who knows even a little history about bodybuilding knows that Muscle Beach was the biggest bodybuilding hot spot between the 1930's and 1950's. Back then bodybuilders used to hang out around Muscle Beach in Venice, California and crowds would gather around to watch them lift, do tricks, and have fun.
Unfortunately, the whole Muscle Beach scene went downhill after allegations of underage girls having sex with bodybuilders near the beach, overly-large crowds, and the city's need for more parking space put a damper on things. In fact, Muscle Beach all but disappeared after this.
Fortunately, Muscle Beach was restored in 1989 and the scene was slowly restored. Sure neither Muscle Beach nor bodybuilding is as big as it was 60 years ago, but I like the fact that Muscle Beach is still around. The weights are there again and it can still draw a crowd as evidenced by the bleachers in place at the beach.
Plus there are bodybuilding shows held there on a regular basis. The latest one was the Muscle Beach Championship, which brought out many of the best amateur and pro bodybuilders. All in all, it's nice to see that Muscle Beach is still being used, and is not just a memory.
