A controversial new book called "Great Soul: Mahatma Ghandi and His Struggle with India" says that Ghandi dated a male bodybuilder during his life. The book, which is written by Joseph Lelyveld, has upset Ghandi followers because it details a close relationship that he had with German-Jewish bodybuilder Hermann Kallenbach, while he lived in South Africa in the early 1900's.
Many of the reviews on Great Soul have harped on the sections that talk about Ghandi being bi-sexual. A Wall Street Journal review even went as far as to call Ghandi a "sexual weirdo" in regards to the subject matter in the book.
As you can imagine, people in India have been angered about the book because Ghandi is revered as a saint and living deity for his time on Earth. However, Great Soul chips away at some of this by discussing his private life, which doesn't exactly fit in with Indian culture since homosexuality was a criminal offense until 2009.
Personally, I can't believe that India is this backwards about sexuality, and could care less what Ghandi did in his personal life. I was mainly just drawn to this story because of the aspect about Ghandi dating a bodybuilder, which is something that's rarely discussed in regards to this influential figure.
