Everyone knows the great feeling you get when starting out on a new workout routine. You’re pumped up when you hit the gym, you are dedicated to getting the most out of every workout, and it feels like you could continue on like this forever. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that once the initial feeling of excitement and motivation is gone it starts to become much tougher for you to remain productive when your free workout routine becomes, well, routine.
At this point, many people start to waste precious time at the gym by talking to others for too long, focusing more on the music they’re listening to rather than on the the actual workout routine, and not squeezing out the extra reps they used to do. And by doing this stuff you’re not only taking much longer to complete your workout routine, but you’ll also be going at it with less intensity and not getting the results you desire.
That’s why it is so important to get as much as possible out of each training session you put in at the gym. Of course this is much easier said than done so I took the time to ask some fellow EliteFitness.com members what they do to stay sharp in the gym. And they helped me come up with a great list of free workout routine productivity tips and other great advice that you’ll definitely want to check out!
But first, I’d like to share my own free workout routine tips on how to set yourself up for success before and during every workout.
Free Workout Routine Tip #1: One of the more obvious ways to improve your workout routine is by getting a personal trainer. Some of the bigger gyms will provide this service for a small fee (or even free) while you can always hire one if your gym doesn’t have personal trainers on staff. Having a personal trainer is a great way to get somebody outside of yourself pushing you to get better. You can even seek out consultations from top bodybuilding experts and coaches such as our own personal trainers at EliteFitness.com.
Free Workout Routine Tip #2: I also think that it’s a great idea to exercise at the same time every day that you work out. Not only does this give your body an equal amount of rest between each session, but it also gives you something to look forward to at a certain time of the day. And it makes working out a part of your routine which helps reinforce the good habit of going to the gym on a regular schedule.
Free Workout Routine Tip #3: I also recommend that you take an energy supplement or two before and possibly during your workout routine. Any dietary supplement that gives you an energy boost should definitely be taken to ensure a quality workout. Personally, I keep my energy booster right in my gym bag.
Free Workout Routine Tip #4: It’s good to have some songs that pump you up playing in the background while you’re training too. Now, as I said before, you shouldn’t be playing DJ while you’re in the gym, but having some pre-selected songs on your iPod or creating a fun fast-paced workout routine playlist is definitely something that will get you pumped and ready. Now on to the advice that our bros at EliteFitness.com have to share!
Free Workout Routine Tip #5: “SouthernLord” feels the best way to ensure a great workout routine is by taking the time to get a good meal in beforehand. He likes to eat plenty of lean protein and carbohydrates at least an hour to an hour and a half before hitting the gym. SouthernLord also likes to drink a carb and amino drink along with water in between sets to stay energized. I think he definitely makes a very valid point in that you really need to pay attention to what you’re ingesting before and during a workout since many people neglect this aspect when training. There\'s nothing worse than crashing because it was too long ago that you ate. But, be careful not to be too full when you go train either.
Free Workout Routine Tip #6: “sweed” finds that a lot of his success in his workout routine comes from proper rest in between sets and also outside of the gym. Following much of the advice coming from our resident expert Omega, sweed recommends that you need to keep your rest in between sets to a minimum of 1 minute, which can be longer if you’re using more weight of course. The key here is to remain consistent so you’re not wandering around the weight room and chatting with everyone. Another thing sweed believes in is getting 7-8 hours of rest each night so your muscles can repair and grow between workouts.
Free Workout Routine Tip #7: “the_alcatraz” is a very early riser and likes to get up around 5 or 6 am to workout because he says this is when your free natural testosterone is at its highest. He also makes a good point that people haven’t had time to waste energy driving, walking, talking, working, etc. this early in the morning. An early morning workout routine also makes it hard to make an excuse later in the day to skip the gym because something came up. Aside from working out in the early morning, he also likes to drink high energy or caffeine drinks 30 minutes before training so he has tons of energy. He also likes to watch bodybuilding DVD’s and or pictures of bodybuilders lifting to get him motivated to do his best in the gym.
Free Workout Routine Tip #8: “Big_BK”, who is one of the top strongman competitors in America right now, believes that having a partner is essential to a quality workout routine. It\'s almost like having a free workout routine personal trainer. He says, “When I have someone there training with me (preferably stronger or bigger than me) I have much more motivation and drive to do better and it’s always nice to have someone screaming at you to get those last reps and give you a little spot to break through your comfort zone.”
Free Workout Routine Tip #9: “21gun” doesn’t believe a partner is as motivating as some of the other things he does to get prepared for a great training session. In fact, 21gun says that he’s went through countless partners because they don’t have the drive he does and believes that you have to dig deep inside of your own self to excel. To prepare he’s been eating ¾ of a cup of oatmeal and a ½ cup of cottage cheese before workouts and has been doing this for 8 years with excellent results. He also watches old videos of Dorian Yates to really fire himself up for a great workout session.
Free Workout Routine Tip #10 : “iggy” likes to channel all of his anger and energy into his lifts to give himself that extra push. Besides consulting Omega on various things, iggy also likes to find a quality partner to train with just like Big_BK does.
Bonus Free Workout Routine Tip #11: And “Big Rick Rock” and many other members agree with me in that you really need to take a supplement and have some good songs picked out on your iPod (or other music playing device) before you start a workout routine.
As you can see, there are lots of different ways to get motivated and prepared before you begin a training session. And not everyone prefers to do the same thing either as you can see with the conflicting opinions on the importance of workout partners. I personally prefer to workout with someone that knows what they’re doing when I get the chance and I also think it’s very important to prepare yourself mentally and fuel properly beforehand too.
