Here's More on Patrick Arnold and BALCO: |
A couple days ago, we had part 1 of this two part article on EF Member Patrick Arnold, the BALCO chemist who invented "The Clear." Here's a link to the full article: BALCO Chemist & EF Member Patrick Arnold Shocking Steroid Comments Part 1 today we have Part 2.
BALCO Chemist & EF Member Patrick Arnold's Shocking Steroid Comments on Victor Conte, Barry Bonds, and Gary Sheffield Part 2
Beyond just name dropping top baseball players in association with steroids, Arnold also provided some great insight into the frame of mind The Clear sets players in by saying, “The best way I can put it is it puts you in the zone and athletes know what that means. I liken it to an animal that’s, that’s hunting like a lion or something. The way a lion can stand there still and zone in on the kill.”
Costas asked Arnold if he believed that these steroids could not only add power resulting in home runs but also improved hand-eye coordination and bat speed which would result in a greater batting average to which Patrick remarked, “No doubt in mind, that’s what the research shows.” This was very interesting as it shattered the common ideology that steroids can’t help a person hit a baseball.

Bob Costas also brought up the grand jury incident where Barry Bonds said he took The Clear but thought it was flax seed oil and inquired if this was plausible to which Arnold laughingly said, “No, no, not in the least. The Clear was THG dissolved in that same stuff that used for that non-toxic antifreeze you put in your car. It’s slightly sweet, sickly bitter, makes you wanna gag. It tasted horrible.”
Near the end of the interview, Costas tried to gain some insight into Arnold’s opinion on the morality of what he and Victor Conte were into and wondered if they ever talked about what they were doing as being wrong. Arnold reminisced, “No we didn’t, and um…I felt that way actually a lot and I kind of wanted to bring it up to him but I never did. I regret not having enough guts to say Victor I don’t feel comfortable about this anymore. I don’t feel like this is right.”
Patrick Arnold concluded that Tim Montgomery breaking the 100 meter world record may have been the point where he really regretted what he was doing since not everyone competing against Montgomery was on a level playing field.
But he thought that the Barry Bonds deal was different because there was no steroid testing in the sport of baseball when Bonds was doing his thing. Arnold had no dilemma with this since there was no rule against steroids at the time and this means that many players could have been using them. This pretty much concluded the interview.
Since this hotly contested interview, there have been quite a few shots thrown towards both Arnold and Costas. Detroit Tigers DH Gary Sheffield exclaimed, “I don't even know this guy. I never met him. How would he meet me? It's insane. It's like people just say whatever they want nowadays and people believe them. How can they accuse me of something when I don't even know him?"
Victor Conte jumped on the anti-Arnold bandwagon too saying, “At no time did I tell Patrick that I provided Barry with any type of anabolic steroids. Arnold's recent interview was undeniably about self-promotion and personal gain. Therefore, his statements lack credibility. I have never discussed the specifics of any athlete's program with Patrick. To suggest that he has any knowledge of steroid use by Barry Bonds is outrageous. Patrick is simply attempting to cash in at the right time, ride the BALCO wave.”
Patrick Arnold wasn’t the only one having barbs thrown at him as Bob Costas also got a healthy dose of dissing from Barry Bonds himself. In response to the episode of Costas Now about him Bonds stated, “Is that the story Bob Costas talked about? A little midget man, who doesn't know jack about baseball, who never played the game before? You can tell Bob Costas what I called him.” Costas was quick with a comeback though remarking, “As anyone can plainly see, I’m 5’6”1/2 and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally.”
With all of the heated exchanges after this interview took place, there are sure to be more angles presented in this tale. I know that I’ll be looking for more on this story in the future as it might get even better!
