A few years ago, I ran a story on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who claims to be the toughest sheriff out there. He has used this moniker to get re-elected time and time again, and gain national fame.
In any case, my problem with Arpaio stems from the fact that he is supposedly so tough on crime - including steroid usage - yet he fought against Arizona measures that would essentially fire any deputy or cop who was caught juicing. Essentially, he thinks that people should do time for using steroids, but cops should get a slap on the wrist.
Well bringing all of this to the present, I recently found it funny that three people right under his nose were busted for smuggling drugs and illegal immigrants. One of the employees was a deputy, and the other two were female detention officers.
And while it's doubtful that Arpaio had any knowledge of the fact that people under his command were engaged in an international drug smuggling ring, it's still funny that this hypocritical sheriff's image will take a blow anyways.
The incident has of course drawn Arpaio to defend himself as he told reporters, "Every organization, you're going to find some people who do wrong. It's human nature." Arpaio also doesn't believe that his department needs any outside help to flush out criminals working under him as he said, "We have enough violence without having moles in my own organization that put my deputies in danger."
